DIY Boiler install

Postby nick060761 on Sun Dec 06, 2009 11:49 am

Hi all I just need some advice about what boiler is best! It is going to be open vent as I want to keep the torpedo H/W tank. At the moment I have a NETAHEAT 10-16 that has started to play up again and I work away from home and don’t want the wife getting cold. I live in a small 2 bed top floor flat of about 1950's build. The boilers I am thinking about are the Remeha avanta 18v'
Atmos interopen he22. From reading up over the last few days these seam to be the better boilers’ around. I will be installing it my self and yes I no the law but will pay a gas engineer to sign it off. Now just wait for all you to tell me not to do it! Well I am a engineer just not a gas engineer and I have installed far more dangerous things than a simple gas boiler. Any waY BG told me it was going to Be about£ 2000 plus  I told the guy its only a boiler the pipe work is all there  and the guy just said that how much it is . I don’t even no what boiler he had in mind. Anyway will get a power flush first then tidy up the pipe work in as who ever did it in the first place just made the whole thing look like a mess. So all I am asking is (1)are there better boilers. (2) Any thing to be had out of fitting a outside stat? (As in the S plan no body says to fit one). I have all ready replaced the timer with a 7 day unit and the same wit the stat also a 7 day unit so I'm not going to change that as open therm control will have to wait till the controls I have break.

I wait the flaming.

I like yourself am a Engineer and 28 years ago I fully installed my Central heating using a Potterton Netaheat, reading all the bump it seams I should update my boiler I am looking at the Baxi Ecogen as a replacement boiler but cant find any prices on it yet.
As usual I suspect that the Government will insist on nominated installers in order to be eligible for the £400 grant. A more fair way method would be to have nominated inspectors to inspect the installation when completed, but I cant see this happening so we have 2 options 1-to pay through the nose and get an approved installer and hope that the price is not to inflated to cover the £400 from the Government. Or 2 DIY once they are on the market and get it inspected to certify the installation and loose the grant.
These boilers generate electricity as well as heat the water so are very Eco friendly and can feed excess electric back to the grid
I have solar panels so a combination boiler is not an option for me.
