What new boiler - if any????

Postby pensioner on Wed Feb 24, 2010 7:08 am

We have a VERY old Glow Worm boiler Aprox. 1964!! in our 1930's 3 bed semi.It is working fine and keeps the rads and the hot water tank hot.

I KNOW a new one would be more efficient. But I have heard SO many horror stories about modern boilers that I am loath to make the change until I have to.

Could any-one recommend a condensing boiler that will last??? We are pensioners so don't have money to replace the system every few years.

We have a maintenance contract with British Gas who have until now replaced all the bits that have gone wrong over the years. They now SAY that the generic parts are no longer available and I should just get a new boiler.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

i personally would fit a worcester bosch as long as the system is flushed correctly and a magnaclean filter fitted then the system will last many years to come

but dont get BG to do it because it will cost you a fortune i worked there for 20 years so i know .

ou don’t realise quite how important your boiler is until it breaks down and you’re left with cold showers, no heating and a big bill for emergency repairs. Rather than having your old boiler fixed to keep it trudging on, it might be time to invest in a new one.

Fitting a worcester bosch works sometimes. But I would agree more with "plumbertemecula". Purchasing a new one is the best option.

a new boiler must be condensing since 2005 this will mean the flue gas exhausts at 40-80C not 300C as is in your old boiler the difference in heat goes to your radiators not the clouds it is easy to see how this saves you energy and consequently bills. Combustion depends on fuel and air basically O2 & hydrocarbon
your basic outputs are heat h20 co2 and co there are also other gases. The H2o (water) in the old boiler is superheated in the new boiler it is steam and will condense in the flue and must be run away to waste the other gases make this slightly acidic.
I am not a GAS fitter however Worcester Bosch make good Gas boilers and a magnetic or vortex trap to eliminate Iron corrosive products is essential
