High Pitch Whining boiler

Hi,

My boiler has begun making high pitch whining sounds when switched on. It still works but clearly there is a problem. There was a faint smell associated with this yesterday which makies me believe it could be serious. Any ideas? We had the control panel replaced by somebody approximately 6 months ago, could this be related? Please help if you can.
