Severe Radiator Problem

Postby Scruffs12 on Thu Apr 23, 2009 3:50 pm

I live in a three story house with nine radiators. In January we had the pump changed and have installed a WILO Gold RS60. At the same time, two radiators were also replaced.

Since that time, even though all radiators are capable of heating up, they won’t all heat up at the same time. If you turn off all the radiators on the first and second floor, the ground floor heats up, the same with the first and then the second floor in their turn.

The water is heated by a boiler on the wall with its own tank and the whole system has just been power flushed to try to rectify the problem but to no avail.

Someone has now advised us that the system is unbalanced, someone else has said that it’s the motorised drive valve, whilst a third has said that the WILO Gold RS60 is not strong enough to push the water around the entire house and I need a WILO TOP S25/7 but this is £200.

Please somebody . . . . . . . . . . . HELP.

What should I do and in which order. Obviously, everyone advising us is trying to be helpful but I think what we need is some advice from someone who has experienced this in the past – is there anyone out there.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

I have experianced something similar. I extended my existing system by an additional 3 radiators and replaced a small rad with a much larger one. This was in a new extention. I had a balancing problem that I had not had before. If you Google "How to Balance Radiators" you should find some good guide lines. It basically involves restricting the flow of water to all of your radiators, by using your lock shields to regulate the water flowing. This should force water to those that are not heating up. You have to turn them all off to start with and then work from the rad that is furthest away from your boiler. The guid lines offer a much better explanation. Good luck. :)

quite possible, checking these requires a thermometer to check the flow and return temps to all rads, can be time consuming.

do you have a mid position valve or 2X2 port valves? its again possible. check to see if valves work.

wilo are rubbish. i would go for a grundfos or if you can get hold of them a DAB, identical to the grunnys but a lot cheaper. is pump inside boiler?
