Rusting radiators

Postby grahamtimms on Mon Jul 13, 2009 7:42 am

Can anyone help. I am on my 3rd heated towel rail in my bathroom in 2 years and, this one has lasted under 2 months until it started to bubbles with rust. I drain the system each time & refill with Fernox but it still keeps happening. Any thoughts? Graham

Chaps, Chances are if the system keeps filling up with magnetite/corrosion debris then chances are you have a system leak which you keep topping up with fresh water. This not only reduces the strength of the inhibitor but also puts freshly oxygenate water into the system (remember rust is Fe03. Fe= Iron, 03 is 3 pars of Oxygen).

If you have an open vented system it may be worth checking the F&E for rust in the tank which would help identify ithere i a leak. If its a sealed system ask yourself whether your topping up with the filling loop regularly. If the answer is yes then you need to solve the leak problem before you reinhibit.

Ive used F4 leaksealer before from Fernox and its good stuff if you cant find the leak from piepwork thats visible.
