right, is your hot water system indirect, off a combi boiler etc? any idea? it can help,
has any plumbing work been done in your house recently? because it could just be a big air lock..
Check in your airing cupboard that your gate valve on your cold feed to the cylinder is open (the 22mm pipe running down to the bottom of the cylinder) should be turned all the way to the left. If your on indirect that is.
If it is an airlock, you can either get a hosepipe and put it on your mains cold top, and blow it through into the hot..
(open the hot tap, stick hose on tap, then on the cold tap and open it) or if you have 2 Washing Machine Valves you could use a washing machine hose to blow it through, usually until you hear water in your loft. (Where it will be coming through your vent from the cylinder) again thats if its on idirect. hopefully that gives you a little more info, but it really depends on the details.
Good Luck :)

another cold water pipe runs from the base of the cylinder to the boiler. The boiler heats the water and returns it to the tank higher up. When hot water is drawn from the tank, it is replaced by cold from the cold tank, which in turn is fed to the boiler.
