Fitting new taps

Postby davemuzza on Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:24 am

Hi everyone,

Please excuse what is probably a very amateur question.

I am trying to fit a new mixer tap to the sink in my bathroom (it wasn't broken, but I changed the one on the bath, and was informed that it was imperative that the two matched  ). I have removed the old tap, but I cannot remove the old tap tails from the water supply. The water supply pipes seem to be put together in a way that looks odd to me, and I wouldn't know where to begin removing the old tap tails (or attaching the new ones) to this setup.

Here is a picture showing the pipes (http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqsTakJ), as it's quite difficult to explain. I'm sure someone who is more of a pro will just be able to look at it and tell me how common this setup is and make me feel very foolish...!

I'd really appreciate any help you can give.

Many thanks

Dave

Hi Dave

What size tails are on your new basin taps, 10mm or 15mm, and are they copper?

1) Turn off the water to the tap - If this is the hot water the stop cock may be near the hot water cylinder. Check that it is off and allow the water to drain of and when the water stops flowing go to the next operation
2) Remove the top of the tap - lever out the very top with a sharp tool.
3) Remove the small screw to remove the top of the tap
4) Undo the main body with a spanner.
5) Screw out the moving section of the tap (normally a left hand thread) - this may also involve removing the circlip - do this carefully as you will need to replace it later.
6) clean out the thread of both parts and then lubricate using silicon lubricant.
7) check the quality of the tap washer and replace if necessary
8) Re-assemble in reverse and turn on water, checking for any leaks when the tap is closed.
Good luck.
