How to unblock a toilet

Postby Neil B on Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:59 pm

A blocked toilet pan causes the flush water to rise almost to the rim and then drain away very slowly. It will probably be blocked in the pan outlet, often by an object such as a disposable nappy being flushed down the lavatory. If the blockage is not in the pan outlet, it could be a problem in the main drainage system. Blockages can be cleared by mechanical or chemical means, however mechanical methods tend to be faster. I know the post above is kind of past it's sell by date now, nevertheless this may help someone, my Father in-law who used to be a builder / carpenter / come plumber, he passed on to me a tip for clearing blocked toilets, he swore by plunging them using nothing more than an old fashioned string type mop. I've used this method myself and so far touch wood, its never failed, & is substantially cheaper than chemicals or mechanical methods. 8-)

Hi
best way to increase hydraulic pressure and cheap to......get an old towel (not one you are gunna wipe face with) put it in the bowel of toilet, get an old mop (string type) and jab it sharply into the toilet on the towel, this increases the hydraulic pressure and works a million times better than a plunger!!!!

Happy sausage hunting!!

Unfortunately toilets occasionally do get blocked usually due to too much toilet paper or heavy loads being put down the pan. First things first you need to find the location of the blockage. If you have drain inspection covers outside it is worth lifting the one nearest the pan. If the chamber is full you need to try and clear the blockage in the pipes or around the drain either using a specialist rod or a makeshift device such as a wire or piece of wood. If the drain is unblocked then the blockage must be located somewhere between the chamber and the pan. In most cases the blockage is found at the pan itself.
